Meeting of the General Assembly of the Francophone Digital Network

On April 10, the General Assembly of the Francophone Digital Network met in Bern, capital of Switzerland. Under the chairmanship of Mr. Guy Berthiaume, Chairman and CEO of National Library and Archives of Quebec, Secretary General of Digital Francophone Network, representatives of 14 French-speaking countries highlighted the results achieved during the past year and discussed the action plan for this year. At the meeting, Sandra Coulibaly Leroy - representative of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) re-affirmed the support of OIF for the protection and promotion of tangible and intangible heritage of the Francophone community. Digitalizing and sharing of resources contribute to the promotion of cultural exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and build a rich community identity.

 

Workshop on “Structuring Library Space”

On 26th March 2014, National Library of Viet Nam in collaboration with the Goethe Institute Hanoiorganized Workshop on “Structuring Library Space”. Currently, Vietnamese Library career has been concentrated and invested in infrastructure. Many libraries including special, academic, public and school libraries have new buildings. Constructions methods are also various, some libraries are involved in all stages of construction process, couple of stages, othersare getting in the “handover the key”. Similar situations happened to equipment projects including project on IT application. It is necessary to do assessment on structuring the library space.

 

Training workshop on traditional, digital preservation and disaster management

In the morning of 24th March 2014, National Library of Viet Nam (NLV)and the Special Libraries Association – Asian Chapter (SLA) has opened the training course and experience sharing on traditional, digital materials and disaster management for more than 200 colleagues representing the city/provincial, academic, special libraries, information centers, National Agency for Science and Technology Information, State Records Management and Archives Department of Viet Nam, lecturers and researchers from Viet Nam, India, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

Conference CDNL-AO22 2014 held on 26-27 February 2014 at the National Library of Australia, Canberra, Australia. This is the third time that the National Library of Australia has hosted the event since the 1st Conference CDNL-AO in 1979. It was attended by officials from 18 national libraries of countries in Asia - Oceania including Australia, Brunei, Cook Islands, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu and Viet Nam. The Delegation of the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) was led by its Director, Mrs. Phan Thi Kim Dung

 

 

Launching Viet Nam Standards: Library Activities – General Terms and Definitions

In two years (2012-2013), with the consent of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the NLV mobilized effort, wisdom, with many individuals and organizations, in accordance with the provisions of Act national standards and technical standards, has completed the construction of national standards on terms and definitions for use in library activities. On 31 December 2013 the Ministry of Science and Technology has published Viet Nam 10274:2013 standards "Library Activities - General Terms and Definitions" (Pursuant to Decision No.4222/QĐ-KHCN 31 December 2013).

 

April 21: Day of the Book of Viet Nam

 On 24th April 2014, the Prime Minister signed Decision No.284/QĐ-TTg that April 21 is now the Book Day of Viet Nam.The Decision stated Book Day of Viet Nam is held each year to encourage and develop reading in the community awareness of the significance and importance of reading to improve the knowledge and skills to develop thinking, education and training of the human personality. At the same time, it enhances the book, says the role, position and importance of the book in social life, honor readers and whom participated in collection, creation, editing, printing, distribution, conservation, promotion of the book. In addition, it helps to raise the responsibility of all levels, sectors, relevant agencies and social organizations to build and stimulate reading in Viet Nam...

 

A delegation of the National Library of Viet Nam paid a working visit to the Federal Republic of Germany

In implementation of the Decision numbered 3724/QD-BVHTTDL dated 28.10.2013 of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) has sent 03 officers to the Federal Republic of Germany to work with the German National Library based in the city of Frankfurt am Main (NLG) and the Bavarian State Library (BSL) in Munich to discuss cooperation in the fields of materials exchange, digitization, preservation, staff training from December 7 -14, 2013.

In Frankfurt am Main, the delegation has had several meetings with Director and ten managers of departments of the NLG. The working focused on introduction of the NLV and NLG as well as sharing knowledge and experiences of the two libraries in the fields of library organization, materials exchange, preservation and digitization, human resources developments.

altOn the 40th anniversary of Viet Nam – Argentina diplomatic relations (1973-2013), Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam in cooperation with Ministry of Culture of the Argentine Republic organized a photos exhibition entitled "Eva Perón - Ambassador of Peace"and presentation of the book “The reason of my life” at the National Library of Viet Nam. The event is a part of the Argentine Cultural Week-long event in Viet Nam.


 

 

Launching ceremony and inauguration of the training workshop "Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23"

In the morning of November 29th 2013, launching ceremony and inauguration of the training workshop on "Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23" (DDC23) has been held at the National Library of Viet Nam. This is one of three important international tools for information access and exchange in library – information activities being used by over 200,000 libraries in 138 countries. Translation and printing of the Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23 are done deriving from practical benefits of cataloguing, contributing to unification, standardization, information exchange and international integration of Vietnamese libraries, and at the same time basing on the demand for application of DDC in Vietnamese libraries. After the launching ceremony of the Vietnamese DDC23, the National Library of Viet Nam has held a ToT training workshop for the Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23 for representatives of some libraries, information centers, special libraries and library training institutions in Viet Nam. The training workshop is lectured by Dr. Julianne Beall, Assistant Editor of the Dewey Decimal Classification and lasts from November 29th until December 6th 2013. In the year 2014, the NLV will organize further training courses for using the Vietnamese DDC23 for all libraries and information centers nation wide.

 

Book Exhibition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of establishment of Viet Nam – United Kingdom Diplomatic Relations

In the afternoon of September 26th, at the National Library of Viet Nam, the Ministry of Information and Communication coordinated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Embassy of the United Kingdom to Viet Nam to organize a Book Exhibition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Viet Nam – United Kingdom diplomatic relations. At the exhibition, the Organizing Committee has selected to exhibit about 1,000 precious documents, publications in English and Vietnamese which are being housed at the National Library of Viet Nam. These publications covering such fields as History, Politics, Economics, Culture, Art-Literature, Science-Technology, etc. have helped outline the development of the United Kingdom – a foggy land from England to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Especially, this is also a chance for book lovers to approach many famous English literature works which have been translated and published in Viet Nam decades ago.Beside displaying publications, the Exhibition also introduced to the public many documentary photos reflexing the comprehensive collaboration between Governments and the people of the two countries...
