Exhibition titled Memory of Viet Nam 1895-1896

Celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and France, “Viet Nam - France Year 2014”, under approval of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam, National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) coordinated with Xua and Nay Magazine held the exhibition titled Memory of Viet Nam 1895-1896. Attending the Opening Ceremony were Mr. Le Nhu Tien, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for Culture, Education, Youth and Children Affairs; Mr. Le Anh Tho - Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Party Committee; Mr. Nguyen Huu Gioi - Chairman of the Trade Union Ministry of Culture , Sports and Tourism; Mr. Le Ngoc Dinh – Deputy Director General of International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Ms. Vu Duong Thuy Nga – Deputy Director General of Library Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Mr. Pham Toan Thang - Deputy Director General of Europe Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Professor Phan Huy Lê, President of the Historians' Association of Viet Nam; Mr. Rémi Lambert – Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of France in Viet Nam; Mr. Jorge Rondón Uzcategui – Ambassador of Venezuela in Viet Nam; Mr. Dominique Cap - Vice president in charge of international cooperation in Brest region; Mr. Jacques Rousseau and his wifewho represent Armand Rousseau’s family, Historian Alain Boulaire – speaker; Dr.Olivier Tessier – Director of the EFEO; representatives from Ministries, Departments, Agencies in Hanoi and Provinces; public and many readers. 

The exhibition introduced nearly 300 precious documents from Indochina collection among more than 2.5 million material items of NLV. They have been published as books, published in newspapers, magazines, and other special types of documents from the late nineteenth century to early twentieth century. In particular, the exhibition presented a historical source of precious photos of Viet Nam in the late nineteenth century, collection of photos taken during Armand Rousseau’s mission as Governor of Indochina (from February 1895 to December 1896). 200 typical photos have selected from his collection to display and introduce at the exhibition. Thephoto covered images of culture, society, scenery, activities and daily life in various localities across Viet Nam where Armand Rousseau had the site survey such as Hanoi, Ha Long, Hai Phong, Tuyen Quang, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phan Thiet, Sai Gon, Cho Lon, My Tho, Tay Ninh, Ba Ria etc.

In the framework of the exhibition, a Seminar on “Daily life of Vietnamese people 120 years ago” by French historian Alain Boulaire was conducted.

The real and simple moment of life, country and people of Viet Nam over 120 years ago, before and after that time will return to public and readers through document, precious photo collection and presentation by historian Alain Boulaire. Through this exhibition and seminar, public, especially young readers understand more about history, culture, social life of the late nineteenth century, a period marked the transition period in Vietnamese history.
