Implementing the 2018 professional training plan of the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) approved by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in the morning of October 1, 2018, in Hai Phong, the NLV held the opening of the training course on using the Resource Description and Access-Vietnamese edition for core cataloguers in northern provinces. This is the first training course of the 3 courses to be held in the North, the Centre and the South respectively.
Attending the opening ceremony was Ms. Kieu Thuy Nga - Director of the NLV, Ms. Tran Thi Hoang Mai - Deputy Director of Hai Phong Service of Culture, Sports and Tourism, library leaders in charge of technical services and cataloguers of some information and library institutions in northern mountains and the Red River delta provinces.
Resource Description and Access(RDA) is an international cataloguing standard, based on the principle of inheriting the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) but is designed for the digital environment in response to changes and development of information resources. The birth of RDA marks a significant change, a step forward in cataloging activity and has been officially applied in many libraries in the world. Conducting RDA training courses for Vietnamese libraries derives from the requirement for modernizing the library-information activities, with the aim to enhance the information exchange and sharing, and the international integration, especially in standardization of the information and material processing.
At the opening ceremony, Ms. Tran Thi Hoang Mai - Deputy Director of Hai Phong Service of Culture, Sports and Tourism stated that the RDA training course is an opportunity for librarians from many different province/city libraries to learn and acquire new knowledge and new cataloguing standard, to share experiences in technical skills and emotional feelings of those following the library profession which is a quiet but respectworthy career.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms. Kieu Thuy Nga – Director of the NLV empasized that “Important changes of RDA, with the significance of designing for digital environment and global expansion for metadata users, have made RDA become the unified cataloguing standard – an improvement of the cataloguing principles from AACR2. This has overcome the main limitation of AACR2 which is still based on card catalogue environment so that it does not support digital library model – a development trend of modern libraries. The RDA cataloguing rules provides the potential to dramatically alter the creation and use of bibliographic data in libraries”.
Right after the opening ceremony, the RDA training program was conducted for nearly 100 trainees from public libraries, special libraries and academic libraries of northern provinces. The training course on using the Resource Description and Access-Vietnamese edition will take place from 1-5 October 2018.
