The National Library of Viet Nam celebrated the 95th Anniversary of Establishment (29/11/1917 – 29/11/2012) and received The First Class Independence Order

On 29th November 2012, the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) solemnly celebrated the 95th Anniversary of Establishment and received the First Class Independence Order - the noble award granted to the NLV by the Vietnamese Communist Party and Government.

Attending the ceremony were H.E. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Doan – Member of the Vietnamese Communist Party Central Committee, Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam; Mr. Pham Quang Nghi – Member of the Politburo, Secretary of the Ha Noi Party Committee; Mr. Le Nhu Tien – Vice Chairman of the Committee for Culture, Education, Youth , Teen and Children of Congress; Mr. Do Quy Doan – Vice Minister of Information and Communications; Mr. Le Doan Hop – Former member of the Vietnamese Communist Party Central Committee, Former Minister of Information and Communications; Mr. Nguyen The Ky – Deputy Head of the Central Committee for Propaganda and Education; Mr. Huynh Vinh Ai - Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Ambassadors of countries' embassies in Ha Noi; Representatives of the National Library of Germany, Singapore and China; Representatives of different library systems throughout the country, and all officials, employees and close readers of the NLV.

Being a cultural institution with nearly a century of existence, the NLV is a pride not only to officials working in the library sector but also to readers throughout the country. During the last 95 years of operation, the NLV has successfully implemented the tasks of propagating, disseminating on large and deep scale knowledge to domestic and international library readers, serving the tasks of the nation’s political, culture, educational, socio-ecenomic development as well as the tasks of sciences research and social fields, making gigantic contribution to the establishment and development of the Vietnamese library system, expanding library cooperation, calling donation of library-information resources with other nations of the world.

In the long journey of 95 years’ establishment and development, the NLV has brought into full play the value of the nation’s treasure of knowledge in the fight to defend the country, in the widespread dissemintation of knowledge to readers and ethinic communities, playing an active role in improving the cultural standards of the ordinary masses, training human resources, fostering talented people, effectively serving the tasks of socio-economic, cultural and political development in Viet Nam, buidling up and defending our beloved country. In answer to the trend of the nation’s renovation and international integration, officials and workers of the NLV through different stages have marched in solidarity, creatively building the NLV into a friendly, realiable service provider for domestic and international library readers, with worthy reputation and respectable status in the domestic, regional and international library communities. In acknowledgment of those achievements, the NLV has proudly received the Government Emulation Flag in many years, the Second Class Independence Order (2007) and especially, in this ceremony, the NLV has the honor to be given the First Class Independence Order.

Looking back over the long journey that the NLV has been gone through, the NLV’s staff have the right to be proud of what have been achieved. A century of hard working of leaders and staff of the Indochinese Central Library and now the National Library of Viet Nam through different stages has help to organization, preservation and promotion of over 2 million units of document. In that significant cultural heritage have the presence of the rare collection since the 17th century with over 5,280 volume of manuscript sino-nom; 19,200 doctoral thesis of Vietnamese people protected at home and abroad as well as of the foreigners protected in Viet Nam; over 4,900 documents published in the period of resistance 1945-1954; especially the legal deposit collection of Vietnamese publications since 1922 upto present with over 680,000 units of document equivalent to 1,380,000 volumes (including books, newspapers, periodicals, descriptions, pictures, pieces of music, maps and many other special publications); the foreign languages collection of about 500,000 units collected through books exchange and donation programs with libraries and information institutions, organizations and individuals and digital collection of over 3 million pages created by the NLV. Everyday, in average, the NLV offers onsite reading services to over 2,000 turns of readers coming to read, research and entertain at the library headquater; and more than 6,000 turns of readers accessing to the triple lingual NLV’s website in Vietnamese, English and French. The NLV has established the cooperation and exchange relationship with 152 libraries and information institutions world wide.

To gain such prominent achievements, the NLV has always received possitive attentions of the Vietnamese Party and Government, directly the Ministry of Culture and Information, now the Ministry of Cultural, Sports and Tourism during the establishment and development of the library.

At the ceremony, Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Doan has granted the First Class Independence Order to the NLV and many other noble awards to the NLV staff who have prominent achievements.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Minister of the MoCST, Mr. Huynh Vinh Ai affirmed that the First Class Independence Order and other noble awards granted to the NLV by the Vietnamese Communist Party and Government are the acknowlegement for tireless efforts by the NLV’s leaders and staff during 95 years of establishment and development. The Vice Minister also assigned tasks to the NLV for the next period which requires the NLV to bring into play the NLV’s tradition and achievements of the last 95 years and make further efforts to fulfill the mission of the library.

On behalf of the NLV, Mrs. Phan Thi Kim Dzung, director of the NLV, acquired the guidances of the Vice Minister and confirmed that the NLV will go on and display with its traditions, to be worthy of its role as the leading library that promotes the libraries throughout the country to develop in the trend of international integration, to well fulfilled the tasks entrusted by the Vietnamese Communist Party and Government, to be worthy of the confidence for the library from leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and from the concerned agencies, has been and will try to become a place that conserves the knowledge and inspire the creativity, to be an user-friendly and realiable service provider for domestic and international library readers.

In front of new requirements of the country and of the culture, sports and tourism sector, the NLV will have to continue to innovate, be dynamic, be creative even more, in order to increase the library’s performance effectiveness, meeting the community’s diverse demands.

To well fulfill these tasks, the NLV will focus on implementation of the following focal tasks:

  • First, Collection, conservation, and promotion of the written cultural heritage should be strengthened. Building a Book Museum of Viet Nam.
  • Second, Continue to better training and further traing activities, the improvement of professional competencies, to educate officials and workers of the NLV in job ethics, job love, sense of responsibility, and enthusiastic mood for everyday work.
  • Third, Develop the NLV toward a traditional-modern-digital library in which the application of information technology for information storage and exploitation is the important trend in library development and formation of a nation-wide traditional-modern-digital library network.
  • Forth, Build the NLV to become an user-friendly and creative reading environment for the life-long learning of all citizens. Develop the library services toward the general target “For the readers” by offering diversified reading services at the NLV’s headquater and online reading services via the NLV website.
  • Fifth, Collaboration with the Ministerial Department of Libraries and with domestic and international libraries should be strengthened to well accomplish the target of “uniformity, standardization, sharing and integration” in terms of professional practice.
  • Sixth, International cooperation in materials exchange, experiences sharing in organization and management of modern libraries and staff training should be extended in order to meet the requirements of the era “knowledge economy” or “knowledge serving development of socio-economic”.

At the same day, the exhibition “The NLV – The place that conserves the knowledge and inspire the creativitywith over 500 units of books, newspapers, abstracts, photos, pictures with diverse format and rich content has been opened, helping the public and readers understand more about the history, stages of development and achievements of the NLV – the central library of the country during the 95-year journey of developing along with the history of the country.

The exhibition’s materials were displayed in 03 contents: History of establishment and development of the NLV; Products and services of the NLV; Precious documents which are currently stored at the NLV; Noble awards granted to the NLV by the Vietnamese Communist Party and Government… In addition, the exhibition also introduces to all readers some precious collections of the Library such as: Resistance book collection, Indochina book collection, The collection of English books written about Viet Nam, The collection of Newspapers, Magazines that are published in Viet Nam from 1862 to now, The collection of online full-text database, video tapes about IT, training courses held by the NLV…

The exhibition helps readers and people who are interested in book, love reading books know more about the importance and the leading role of the NLV in collecting, organizing, exploring, and preserving the nation’s cultural heritage.

The exhibition will open until 10th December 2012
