On the 2nd of December 2011, at Tinh Bien District, An Giang province, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has co-operated with Central Department of Propaganda, An Giang People’s Committee to open the the 5th ethnic Khmer cultural, sports and tourism festival in the Southern Region in 2011 with the theme “Ethnic Khmer cultural, sports and tourism festival in the Southern Region – Integration and development”. This is an important national cultural event and opportunity to introduce and promote An Giang people’s images with friends at home and abroad.
The festival highlights a variety of cultural activities including long-boat races, cow racing, fashion show featuring the Khmer costumes, propaganda and advocacy of books on traditional food and cuisine contest etc.
Many local people visit the exhibition
This is the first time the National Library of Vietnam (NLV) has participated in the festival and displayed 300 documents under the titled “Distinctive Khmer culture in the Southern Region” including books, periodicals, photos which are stored at the NLV. The NLV’s exhibition area opened to public from 1st to 4th of December 2011. Hundreds of local people, especially researchers and Organizing Board have visited the exhibition and highly appreciated valuable materials sources of NLV which are displayed at the exhibition
Besides the exhibition, the NLV also participated in the festival as the role of Organizing Committee for contest of propaganda and advocacy books on traditional culture and history of Southern region. NLV has been in conjunction with An Giang provincial library to donate nearly 3,000 valuable books worth over 100 million Viet Nam dong to 5 Districts and Border Posts of An Giang province bordering with Cambodia. Representatives from library of communes, districts and border posts expressed their deep of thanks and highly appreciate donated books from NLV. Books are donated for Tinh Bien, Tri Ton, An Phu, Phu Tan district libraries; Tan Chau commune library, library of 947 Nhon Hung border post, library of 957 Vinh Gia border post, library of border post in Song Tien international border gate etc.
