To implement the duty assigned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam (MoCST) to the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) in building the national standards for library activities, on 30th August 2013, a Symposium entitled “Discussion and Contribution for the draft TCVN: Library activities – Terminologies and Definitions. Part 1. Basic Terminologies” has been co-organized at the NLV by Department of Science, Technology and Environment (MoCST) and the National Library of Viet Nam. The aim of the Symposium is to highlight the role of standardization in library activities and complete content of the library standards that have been compiled.
Attending the Symposium are Ms. Dinh Nguyen Phuong Thao – Vice Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment; Ms. Vu Duong Thuy Nga – Vice Director of the Library Department representing the MoCST; Mr. Phung Quang Minh, representing the Vietnam Standards and Quality Institute; leaders and representatives of libraries, library-information centers and library-information professionals nation wide; Ms, Phan Thi Kim Dzung, director of the NLV and Vice Directors, Heads & Vice Heads of Divisions of the NLV.

In the field of Information – Library, standardization is the process to establish and apply regulations for repeated tasks of the library-information activities in order to ensure the stability and efficiency of these activities. Standardization has become a trend and a requirement for library activities, especially in the current context of globalization, integration to the world community and application of Information Technology.
The aim of standardization of the Library - Information activities is to reach an unification in description and catalogue of the library materials as well as creation of user service methods and library-information products towards low cost, high efficiency and time saving, etc. while benefits of the users and librarians are still ensured.
This TCVN includes 4 parts: Part 1 – General Terminologies of the Library activities. The later parts will be terminologies of each specific field.
10 papers and contributions of the library – information professionals and experts have been presented at the Symposium. These contributions to the draft TCVN focused on the following issues:
- Highlight the necessity of standardization in library activities.
- Current status of development and application of national standards in library activities in Viet Nam
- Development direction for standardization of the Vietnamese library activities
- Feedbacks and discussions for terminologies and definitions addressed in the Draft TCVN “Library activities – Terminologies and Definitions. Part 1. Basic terminologies”
At the conclusion of the Symposium, an unanimous opinion with the structure of the draft TCVN has been reached. The Symposium also agreed that basic terminologies related to library activities have been covered quite adequately in the draft TCVN while there are still some terminologies need to be edited, added as well as further considered for the TCVN and some terminologies should be edited correctly in Vietnamese, English and Russian, etc.
