Opening Ceremony of Exhibition “Petöfi: Around the World”

Incommemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Poet Petöfi (1823 - 2023), on the afternoon of May 29, 2023, the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) and the Hungarian Embassy in Viet Nam collaborated to organize the opening ceremony of the exhibition “Petöfi: Around the World”. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dung, Acting Director of the NLV, and Mr. Tibor Baloghdi– Hungarian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Viet Nam co-chaired the ceremony.

Attending the event, there were Ms. Tran Hai Van – Deputy Director General of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST); Mr. Keijo Norvanto - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Finland to Viet Nam, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan – former Ambassador of Viet Nam to Hungary. There were also representatives of leaders of agencies, units, and professional associations under the MoCST, representatives of leaders of the Institute of Social Sciences Information, Library of Congress, Military Library, Ha Noi Public Library, press agencies, the public, and library users attending the event.

The exhibition “Petöfi: Around the World” is a unique journey that takes attendances on a journey through 19 large-format photographs, including 15 ones in Vietnamese and 4 with similar content in English, sketching the life and many contributions of Sándor Petöfi– the great Hungarian poet and revolutionary.

Sándor Petőfi (real name Petrovics Sándor) is a famous poet and revolutionary of Hungary in particular and the world in general. The poetic legacy he left for posterity is admirable, with the number of more than 850 poems and epics, one novel, three short stories, two plays, hundreds of letters, diary pages, travel notes, articles on political topics, literary criticism, and many translations of the famous works of the world into Hungarian. He is considered the country's first poet known to the world and the most influential representative of Hungarian romanticism. Prominent themes in his compositions are love for people, patriotism, love of freedom, democracy, and the unyielding will of the nation… His name is associated and radiant with the revolution of the people's liberation race, with the goal of turning Hungary into an independent, republican country.

The photographs at the exhibition are delicately displayed, combined with quotations from famous works of Petöfi, providing the public with a harmonious experience of images and literature, thereby conveying a profound message. message about the love, freedom, and aspiration of the poet.

This event is one of the activities of the cooperation program to promote cultural exchange between Vietnam and Hungary. Besides extensive, effective and comprehensive cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment, defense, education, training, science and technology, environment, and health... the two sides also made great efforts to promote active cooperation in the field of culture, share experiences in preserving and promoting national cultural identity and traditions in the development process.

The exhibition opens from May 10-16, 2023 at the National Library of Viet Nam, 31 Trang Thi, Hoan Kiem, Ha Noi.
