Launching ceremony and inauguration of the training workshop "Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23"

In the morning of November 29th 2013, launching ceremony and inauguration of the training workshop on "Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23" (DDC23) has been held at the National Library of Viet Nam.

Attending the ceremony were Mr. Phan Dinh Tan – Deputy Chief of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Secretariats; Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai – Director of Library Department (MoCST), Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van – Deputy Director of Emulation and Reward (MoCST); Ms. Phan Thi Kim Dung – Director of the National Library of Viet Nam; Mr. Pham The Khang, President of the Vietnamese Library Association; Dr. Julianne Beall – Assistant to the Dewey Decimal Classification, the U.S. Library of Congress; DDC Advisory Board Committee; representatives of the Atlantic Philanthropies Foundation and RMIT International University; directorial board of the NLV through different stages; leaders of provincial/ city libraries, academic library-information centers, special and interdisciplinary libraries, library training institutions and participants of the training workshop from all over the country.

The Dewey Decimal Classification is one of the three important international tools for information access and exchange in library – information activities being used by over 200,000 libraries in 138 countries. Translation and printing of the Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23 are done deriving from practical benefits of cataloguing, contributing to unification, standardization, information exchange and international integration of Vietnamese libraries, and at the same time basing on the demand for application of DDC in Vietnamese libraries.

For that significance, in August 2010, the NLV had an agreement with OCLC, the copyright holder of the Dewey Decimal Classification, on translation of the full edition of DDC23 from English into Vietnamese. In May 2011, the English edition 23 of DDC was released in the United States of America and in July 2011 it was released overseas. In August 2011, the NLV received the whole English edition of DDC23. The Vietnamese edition of DDC23 has been updated with this version.

The Vietnamese edition 23of Dewey Decimal Classification ensures the consistency in classification of library, information agencies nationwide, contributing to standardization and sharing of information resourses among libraries at home and abroad. The Dewey Decimal Classification - Edition 23 is also a valuable material for research and training institutions of library – information nation wide to train students of this major.

After the launching ceremony of DDC23, the National Library of Viet Nam has held a ToT training workshop for the Dewey Decimal Classification - Vietnamese Edition 23 for representatives of some libraries, information centers, special libraries and library training institutions in Viet Nam. The training workshop is lectured by Dr. Julianne Beall, Assistant Editor of the Dewey Decimal Classification and lasts from November 29th until December 6th 2013. In the year 2014, the NLV will organize further training courses for using the Vietnamese DDC23 for all libraries and information centers nation wide.
