Jubilant celebration of the World and Copyright Day 23rd April 2012 at the National Library of Vietnam

Towards the 60^th anniversary of the traditional day of book Publishing – Printing and Distributing Sector of Vietnam and the 95 years anniversary of the National Library of Vietnam (NLV), under the approval of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, NLV has jubilant organized the Reading Festival with the theme “Books-Knowledge: Origination of Success” on 21^st April 2012.

The Reading Festival included many diverse activities, be renewed for content quality and format to continue affirming the great value of reading, honoring authors, works, publishing profession, printing, distribution and library sector in Vietnam, raising awareness among community about the importance of reading and enforcement of copyright protection, the role of the library - reading and life-long learning environment of the people in the country and abroad.

Beginning of the Reading Festival is the bicycle team of Book Loving Readers Club, starting at Hoan Kiem lake – heart of the capital – moving forward to central streets with messages promoting the Reading Festival and World Book day 23^rd April. The team arrived at the National Library of Vietnam on time.

The activities of the festival have been held at the same time, creating a bustling atmosphere attracted audience, pupils, students, book lovers attended.

Centre of the Festival is the Exhibition “Interesting books, beautiful books and precious books” – introduced interesting books have awarded prizes Vietnamese books from 2005 to 2011, precious books, ancient books, books on special materials, books in biggest and smallest sizes etc. Ancient books published from the past to present, unique books, awarded prize books etc have collected and presented at NLV: bzone books, Buong leaves books, wood-blocks, small bookcases etc. In addition to the ones have been introduced, the exhibition also introduced a variety of other materials such as ordained written on tissue paper (the original), biggest size books, big size books for the blind ones, Sino – Nom materials, books published during French colonial (Indochina collection)

With over 600 typical works among the endless cultural heritage of the nation being stored at the NLV, libraries, museums and bookcases of the whole country, besides materials stored at the National Library of Vietnam, the Organizing Committee has contacted, borrowed and collected to provide the public, books lovers, whom are fond of books or interested in reading books to have better understanding of the endless cultural heritage of Vietnam. The exhibition will last on 25^th April 2012.

Conference on "Book - Library - Readers" by the speakers, writers and literary criticism Trung Trung Dinh, Ngo Tu Lap, Duy Li, Nguyen Viet Chuc, the criticism Van Gia. Nguyen Writing Position critic Van Price. Exchanges between scholars, authors, literary critics with the book lovers have helped the public get an overview of literature and reading culture of the country.

Speeches on feelings about some award-winning books of Vietnamese books contest was the contest for readers, students of the University in Hanoi such as: University of Culture, Foreign Trade, Social Studies and Humanities University, Hanoi Tourism College etc.
First prize of the contest belonged to Pham Thi Phuong from Hanoi University of Culture. Two second prizes awarded to Nguyen Thuy Linh from Hanoi University of Foreign Trade and Nguyen Thu Hang, Social Sciences and Humanities University

Story-telling in English through books contest for children by children from primary schools in Hanoi and Hai Phong involved in the subjects such as history, culture, tourism, environment and traffic. They gave the audience the stories lovely, appealing people by drama and graphic. The contest also brought surprises on their ability to perform excellent performance of English pupils. First prize was awarded for pupils from Doan Thi Diem School. Two second prize belonged to Nguyen Ba Ngoc Primary School, Deo Mountain Elementary School (Thuy Nguyen, Hai Phong). Two third prizes were awarded to Tran Quoc Toan and Experimental Primary Schools and many other minor prizes.

Painting through books contest for children: Pupils from primary schools in Hanoi and Hai Phong participated in the contest this year. The theme of the contest associated with characters in books which they had read and learnt.

By lovely, gentle drawing lines, a closely laid-out, following closely theme assigned by the Assessment Board, they have lead the public to the fun world of childhood, tales, myths etc. through their paintings. The results of the contest: first prize awarded to Painting “Treatment for the turtle” by Hoang Anh Duong – pupil in Class 3B, Nguyen Ba Ngoc primary school. The work has left good impression not only on the laid out, colors but also the whole idea. There was not only the "character" shown attached to children but also suggestive messages to each person. The Organizing Board has awarded two second prizes, three third prizes, five honorable prizes and 5 prizes the prospects for the pupils participated

In addition, the festival program also has a number of other activities such as: How to select and read appropriate books: children are freedom to choose and read books, with the advice and guidance of the staff at the National Library of Vietnam; books given to children; Publishing Houses and Bookstores sold books with special prizes to encourage people reading books, games how activities included fun Q&A games on knowledge of books, library, history, culture, tourism, environment and traffic; drawing contest followed the theme: “Books- Origination of Knowledge”; the competition is not only exciting but also left joy and memories for all participants with valuable and meaning gift.

At the end of the Reading Festival is the lucky drawing lost: presents are interesting set of books, Kindle - electronic reading device, tablet PCs awarded randomly to participants.

Particularly, an indispensable activity of the annual festival is NLV is an reliable address for receiving, sharing resources and equipments donated and distributing to regional libraries and remote areas, border and islands. This activity is very meaningful and humanity, contributing to spread out the reading habit of the whole country.

Over 6 years of operation, Reading Festival held at NLV have gained many fruitful results: becoming an active pattern in libraries of the whole country contributing actively encourage the reading of community attracted the attention and participation of wide classes of people with thousands of participants annually and got the response and support of society. Reading Festival day at NLV really impressed deeply, public opinion is appreciated, not only encouraged reading, creation, but also created cultural playground for people every April occasion
