In celebration of the Viet Nam Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21) and World Book and Copyright Day (April 23), The National Library of Vietnam (NLV), in collaboration with various ministries, branches, international organizations, libraries, schools, publishers, bookstores, and businesses, organized the Book and Reading Culture Day 2024 on April 20, 2024 under the theme: The World I Read.

Domestic guests attending the 2024 Book and Reading Culture Day include Mr. Pham Quang Nghi - former Politburo member, former Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, former Minister of Culture and Information; Mr. Cao Duc Phat - former Standing Deputy Head of the Central Economic Commission, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Mr. Phan Viet Luong - Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for Culture and Education; Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam - Deputy Minister of Information and Communications (MIC); Mr. Tong Van Thanh - Director of the Department of Press and Publication, Central Propaganda Department; Mr. Vu Minh Dao - Director of the Department of Culture and Education of the National Assembly; Mr. Nguyen Nguyen - Director of the Authority of Publication, Printing and Distribution, Ministry of Information and Communications. On behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, there were presence of Ms. Trinh Thi Thuy, Deputy Minister; Mr. Nguyen Tuan Linh, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee; Mr. Nguyen Thanh Liem, Chief Inspector; and Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hoa, Director of the Department of International Cooperation.
International guests include Ambassadors, Deputy Ambassadors, Chief Representatives, Cultural Attachés, and officials from embassies in India, Poland, Chile, Cuba, the United States, Panama, the Philippines, Thailand, China, and the Walloon-Bruxelles Delegation.
Also attending the event were representatives of the Departments of the Central Propaganda, the National Assembly Office, the Committee of Culture and Education of the National Assembly; representatives of leaders and former leaders of Party agencies, Youth Unions, Departments, Offices, units, and professional associations under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Ministry of Defense.
Representation from libraries and information centers, publishers, bookstores, educational institutions, businesses, speakers, writers, poets, researchers, critics, scientists, managers, lecturers; organizations, individuals, news agencies, newspapers, radio stations, and countless readers... were also present at the event.

The Book and Reading Culture Day 2024 is a significant event reaffirming books' position and indispensable role in social life. It aims to encourage and develop the reading movement in the community, not only limited to traditional printed materials but also expanded to audio, visual, and digital platforms. At the same time, it honors those who write, make, preserve, and promote books; connects domestic and foreign readers, and creates positive effects in building a learning society, contributing to the promotion of Vietnamese culture and people towards the goal of country's sustainable development.
Activities on the Book and Reading Culture Day 2024 are designed in many rich and diverse forms with attractive content, drawing the attention and participation of a large number of readers and the public.
The exhibition "Books – The Door to the World" showcases 1,000 books according to four thematic areas: (1) Books - Change Thinking, (2) Books - Broaden Vision, (3) Books - Explore the World, and (4) From Page to Success. The exhibition's materials highlight the importance of books in developing each individual and society. From the books they read, people have enough knowledge to apply in their daily lives while also feeling more motivated to change themselves, expand their vision of the world, and make life more enjoyable. "Books - The Door to the World" also delivers and recommends excellent books and unique stories from the wealth of human knowledge. Furthermore, the exhibition also allows Vietnamese publishers to introduce their works to the public and readers, enhance copyright transaction operations, and expand international collaboration.
The program "Exchange of Authors and Works" introduces readers to the book "Learning, Reading, and Creativity," published by Information and Communications Publishing House. This is a compilation of the Ancestors' teachings from ancient to modern, from East to West, and sharing of cultural and educational activists. The book is collected, selected, and compiled by Professor. Dr. Nguyen Nhu Y, Dr. Tran Chi Dat, Dr. Vo The Quan, Dr. Vu Thuy Duong. In front of over 100 attendees at the exchange, authors and speakers discussed the benefits of reading, how to read books effectively, and emphasized that the book "Learning, Reading, and Creativity" is more than just a regular publication; it is also a helpful guide for every family and everyone living in an economy and education that is shared and influenced by the 4.0 technology revolution. The exchange concludes with warmth, pleasure, smiles, and fresh flower bouquets. This significant activity encourages reading and recognizes the importance of books in the community.
This year's "Creative Reading" session with attractive storytelling and expressive language, drew approximately 200 young readers from Hanoi's primary schools. By incarnating into characters to reenact the story’s ending and invent scenarios, the Vietnamese fairy tale "Tam Cam" that many people like is like being given a new, more vivid, and more appealing dress. The participating teams' performances have created a harmonious connection with deeply humane messages, and the "Creative Reading" session is definitely a journey to discover excellent literature works of children.
"Discovering the Digital Library" is an activity that introduces children to rich digital resources, with more than 10,500 books in Vietnamese and English, five sign languages, and more than 60 other highly educational languages. The program is organized into three activities: 1. Amazing Reading Race, which tests reading abilities with questions separated into three rounds: warm-up, obstacle course, and finish line; 2. Readathon tests the ability to glance up and read quickly with 21 questions in 21 minutes; 3. Mini-Games include Secret Crossword Puzzle, Finding book titles, and Bingo. The competition sections are beautifully designed, the questions combine Vietnamese and English in multiple-choice, crossword puzzles, and videos with vivid, eye-catching images that pique children's interest and encourage them to read books. The activity attracts the participation of hundreds of elementary school students. Many children win competitions and get presents from the Organizing Committee thanks to their quick improvisation, good memorization, and teamwork skills.
Thematic activity, "Sowing the seeds of knowledge" combines reading books with cultural activities such as practicing music, watching movies, and developing talents to provide children with a fun experience and discover exciting things from books. The exercise, which features a soft, meaningful storytelling style and active engagement between the speaker and the listener, attracts the participation of approximately 100 children and 25 preschool instructors. The enthusiasm and happiness of the children participating in the program inspire teachers and librarians to appreciate their jobs more daily.
The Drawing Contest on the theme "Colorful World through Books" is a valuable and healthy playground to help children express their artistic talents and encourage a passion for reading, contributing to forming the values of truth, goodness, and beauty. The contest is a journey to find the beauty of life and dreams through vibrant colors. It encourages readers to discover magical, beautiful, new, and exciting things in the pages of books. This year's competition attracts more than 250 students to participate. After three rounds of fair and responsible judging, the Organizing Committee presents 2 Special awards, 4 First prizes, 6 Second prizes, 6 Third prizes, and 20 Promising rewards to the finest works from Primary and Secondary schools.
The attraction of experiencing and practicing reading skills in the course Experience super reading skills and adequate memory has attracted nearly 200 students to participate. This is a valuable activity to help students have effective and modern methods of reading and learning science, increasing their reading speed by 2.5 times while developing their presentation ability and inspiring and challenging their passion for reading.
The online contest "Good Books Find Beautiful Names" is designed to foster creativity and critical thinking in each individual's reading experience and to propagate, encourage, and expand the reading movement in the community. The contest did not last long, but thanks to the attraction of being able to unleash the creativity and develop the abilities of each individuals, after nearly a month of launching, the Organizing Committee received participation from a large number of readers across the country and selected 63 excellent entries after the preliminary round to enter to the final round. Following a period of very severe and urgent work, the Jury conducted scoring and consensus and selected the ten best entries to win prizes and be honored.
The "Book Conservation Station" introduced the public to one of the Library's critical professional activities and was an opportunity for readers to participate in experiencing some of the most basic repair and restoration skills to understand more about the work of preserving documents, thereby appreciating books and the works of librarians. At the same time, it promoted thinking and creativity in creating unique products associated with reading and reading promotion activities. The students who participated in this exercise were pleased since they could repair and patch damaged documents with their own hands. Some clever children also constructed awe-inspiring handcrafted items.
Furthermore, some activities such as Date with our Page; Display of winning works of the Painting though book contests; Lucky bracelets, and Donating books worth more than 600 million VND to 31 beneficiaries, including libraries in remote areas, disadvantaged areas, social protection centers,… were also organized at the Book and Reading Culture Day 2024, contributing to promoting the image of the Library to readers and the public, enhancing interactive experiences associated with reading activities, and promoting reading.
The “Lucky bracelets” program attracted the enthusiastic participation of nearly 1,000 readers and book lovers has closed a series of meaningful activities of the Books and Reading Culture Day 2024.
"Books bring knowledge, discovery, and profound experiences. Read books today, succeed tomorrow" is the message The National Library of Viet Nam conveys to readers and book lovers with the desire to contribute to spreading the value of books and reading culture in the community.
