On 26th March 2014, National Library of Viet Nam in collaboration with the Goethe Institute Hanoiorganized Workshop on “Structuring Library Space”.
Attending the workshop, there were representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam: Ms. Dinh Nguyen Phuong Thao – Deputy Director of the Science, Technology and Environment; Mr. Do The Anh – official in charge of Library-Museum, Planning and Finance Department; Ms. Almuth Meyer-Zollitsch – Director of the Goethe Institute in Viet Nam; Dr. Klaus Ulrich Werner - Director of the Philological Library at the Free University of Berlin, committee member of the construction directions for building libraries and archives of the German Institute for Standardization, Ms. Nguyen Thi Duyen – Chief Executive of the Construction Corporation Viet Nam, Mr. Nguyen Lam Cuong – Deputy Director General of the Viet Nam Construction Corporation, Mr. Le Van Viet – Head of the Vietnam Library Association Office; representatives from City/Provincial, University, Special libraries, Library-Information centers, library training institutions across the country.
Currently, Vietnamese Library career has been concentrated and invested in infrastructure. Many libraries including special, academic, public and school libraries have new buildings. Constructions methods are also various, some libraries are involved in all stages of construction process, couple of stages, othersare getting in the “handover the key”. Similar situations happened to equipment projects including project on IT application. It is necessary to do assessment on structuring the library space.
Vietnamese libraries are changing towards development and integration. On the way to step up, structuring library space is extremely important problem in the construction of a modern library. An appropriate library space will contribute to environmental improvement in services, creating favorable conditions for the readers/users to promote creativity and develop their potential in a comprehensive manner.
5 presentations and opinions of foreign experts, specialists, and managers were presented at the workshop focusing on issues:
- Model of structuring library space in Germany and Vietnamese libraries
- Policy issues: standards and design, construction for library building and campus to meet requirements of a modern library.
- Technical issues: organizational and technological process of modern libraries in the actual conditions of Viet Nam and space shaping for each zone.
- Reality issues: assessment of construction and equipment projects have been made recently as reference to the next project, the experience of foreign libraries in solving this problem.
