The National Library of Viet Nam organizes Book Festival Day 2018

Welcoming the Viet Nam’s Book Day April 21^st, the World Book and Copyright Day April 23^rd, with the approval of the Leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST), in the morning of April 19^th, 2018, the National Library of Vietnam (NLV) together with the central agencies, committees, ministries, libraries, schools, international organizations, enterprises... opened the Book Festival Day 2018 with the theme "Books - Knowledge creates thefuture".

Attending the festival were Mr. Pham Quang Nghi - former Politburo Member, former Party Secretary of Hanoi; Mr. Le Doan Hop - Former Member of the Party Central Committee, former Minister of Information and Communications; Mr. Truong Minh Tuan - Member of the Central Party Committee, Minister of Information and Communications; Mr. Vo Van Phuong - Member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Deputy Head of the Central Commission for Propaganda and Training; Mr. Nguyen The Ky - Member of the Party Central Committee, General Director of the Radio Voice of Viet Nam; Mr. Do Manh Hung, Deputy Chairman of the Office of National Assembly; Mrs. Kieu Thuy Nga - Director of the NLV, Head of the Book Festival Day 2018 Organization Board; Leaders of the Offices, Departments of Central Propaganda and Training, Offices of the Party Central Committee, Offices of the Government, Offices of the National Assembly, National Assembly Committee for Culture, Education, Youth, Adolescents and Children; Representatives of the Offices, Departments, Institutes, Associations under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Information and Communication, Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Defense; embassies, international organizations in Hanoi, news agencies, newspapers, radio stations, publishing houses, libraries, universities, high schools, secondary schools, elementary schools, researchers, scholars, historians, writers, organizations and individuals with numerous readers of all ages.

The Book Festival Day this year continues to be held in order to reach out to the masses and readers, to deepen the importance of books and knowledge in the social life, while affirming knowledge as a basis for development and books are the fastest and most powerful way to access to knowledge and also a solid foundation for buidling a bright future. The Book Festival 2018 brings many meaningful activities, such as the "Books - Knowledge creates thefuture”documentary exhibition; Exchange of authors – works; Painting through book contest; Storytelling contests in Vietnamese and English; Literary Work Identity contest, etc.

(1) "Books - Knowledge creates thefuture”documentary exhibition: More than 500 featured materials are exhibited from April 19^th to May 5^th, 2018 under four contents: Role of books and knowledge in social life; Access to knowledge; Pioneers and achievements that have changed the world; Knowledge connection - Future creation. The exhibition provided the public and readers the knowledge-intensive cultural works, this is also an opportunity for readers to exchange, learn and research to accumulate knowledge for starting a business. Through the exhibition, readers understand more about the life and career of scientists, scholars... and achievements, inventions that have changed the world, trends and importance of connecting knowledge to create the future.

(2) The first National Book Award Ceremony: Continuously developed on the basis of the Viet Nam’s Book Award, the National Book Award organized by the Viet Nam Publications Association with the participation of many publishers and hundreds of books registered for the award.After the evaluation, estimation and voting process of the Preliminary Board and the Final Board, the National Book Awards Boardhas seriously selected: 3 works for Good Book of A-level Award; 3 works for Beautiful Book of A-level Award; 9 works for Good Book of B-level Award; 5 works for Beautiful Book of B-level Award; 10 works for Good Book of C-level Award; 5 works works for Beautiful Book of C-level Award; Good Book and Beautiful Book Award focuses on 8 fields: Theory - Politics, Education - Training, Natural Sciences and Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities, Culture - Arts, Literature and Children… These are really high political and humanistic books, and at the same time contains the promotion character of not only good and beautiful in content but also particularly interesting.

(3) Exchange of authors - works: Author Nguyen Huy Thang, Tran Chi Nghia; speakers: Researcher Bui Viet Thang, PhD. Nguyen Manh Hung, Educational PhD. Nguyen Thuy Anh introduced and exchanged with readers about the works “The Arts and resistance through the lens of Tran Van Luu”, “Old charm”, children's books ... which are the mark of time works that have contributed to build up a part of the history of Vietnamese art as well as a part of the history of the nation.

(4) Painting through book contest: Under the theme of “Ha Noi in my eyes”, the sketches through the puresouls of childrenhave brought viewers to visit almost all the famous historical sites of Ha Noi: From Hoan Kiem Lake with the crowded, bustling streets to the West Lake with misty fantasy. A Ha Noi with all the beauty in the eyes of children.

(5) Storytelling through book in Vietnamese: The stories of history, culture, literature of Viet Nam and the world are reappeared by primary school’s teachers in the form of storytelling in Vietnamese for students. This new form of storytelling is a lively, effective lecture, providing students with core knowledge, simple but easy to remember and engrave.

(6) Storytelling through book in English: The stories of history, culture, literature of Viet Nam and the world are perceived and re-interpreted by children in form of plays in a very humorous, witty way but no less deep, emotional rich deposition in the heart of the audience.

(7) Literary Work Identity contest: Typical works related to history, culture, literature, landscapes of Viet Nam and the world are suggested by the specific hints which were identified rapidly by the playing teams in a funny atmosphere.

Besides organizing the activities, the NLV also displaysthe prize-winning paintings of the 3 latest years painting through book contests under the Book Festival Day; Organizes the reception and sharing of donated books from agencies, organizations and individuals ... to a number of libraries in remote, border and island areas throughout the country. This can be considered as a significant, humanistic and meaningful activity of the library sector, a great effort of the libraries in contributing to the improvement of people’s intellectual level and reading culture.

The festival also receives the participation of a number of publishers and bookstores introducing thousands of titles with rich content, giving participants the opportunity to select favorite works at preferential prices and more.

It can be said that the Book Festival Day has become a social activity with a cultural symbol, having a wide spread, contributing to nurture, maintain, develop, affirm and honor the Book and the reading culture of the entire nation of Viet Nam.
