In the afternoon of February 25, 2011, National Library of Vietnam hosted a Seminar on “Resource Description and Access and its applicability to Vietnam”. Attending the seminar were Ms. Allaster Cox – Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Ms. Pamela Gatenby, Assistant Director General of the National Library of Australia (NLA), Ms. Jan Fullerton, Former Director General, NLA; Mr. Nguyen Hai Anh, Director of Emulation and Reward Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam) and representatives from Vietnamese Library Association, Vietnamese Information – Document Association, National Agency for Science and Technology Information, public libraries and special libraries in Vietnam.

RDA (or Resource Description and Access) was introduced by Steering Joint Committee (SJC – U.S.A). RDA was built based on cataloguing rules, functional requirements for bibliographic records (FRBR) and functional requirements for authority data (FRAD). RDA is seen a cataloguing rule for the XXI century.

At the seminar, library experts has discussed, exchanged ideas and shared experiences about RDA in such areas as: differences between AACR2 and RDA, influences of RDA on Vietnamese libraries, the applicability of RDA to Vietnamese libraries. The seminar also confirmed to continue conducting researches about RDA, the ability to apply it in practice as well as roadmap for application of RDA in Vietnamese libraries in the coming time.
