Implementing Decision number 875/QD-BVHTTDL dated March 31, 2023 of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on annual training of digital transformation, from September 20-21, 2023, in Da Nang, the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) organized a training course on data processing and standardization.

Attendingthe opening ceremony were Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dung – Director of the NLV, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi An – Deputy Director of Da Nang Department of Culture and Sports, Mr. Nguyen Huu Gioi – President of the Vietnamese Library Association, Mr. Hoang Dung – Deputy Director of the Institute for Digital Knowledge Research & Development, lecturers and presenters participating in the training course, representatives of leaders and officials working on information technology from public, academic, specialized and armed forces libraries nationwide.

The national digital transformation program proposed by the Government has urged all sectors and industries of the country to change their perception and embark on digital transformation. Digitizing materials, processing and standardizing data is not only an extremely necessary professional activity in libraries but also one of the foundational activities to carry out the digital transformation of library activities. Creating metadata is the next step in the library resource digitization process. This is one of the most important stages in the process of digitizing library resources in particular and in all the fields having organization and management of digital objects in general, playing a key decisive role in the identification and use of resources.
As a continuation ofthe training courses "Digitizing materials forimplementation ofdigital transformation" in the series of professional training courses organized by the NLVsince2022 with the topics: Standard file formats for digital materials; provide guidance onthe process of digitizing documentsand processing digital materialsusing free software while still meeting the quality requirements for processing digital materialsin library activities,this year's training program focuses on equipping and updating content aboutprocessing and standardizing metadata for digital resources, suitable for many audiences such as catalogers, metadata catalogers, manager and technical officer in charge of digital library development, database administrators, website developers...

Content of the training program includes:
- Overview about metadata and Dublin Core metadata;
- Processing data according to Dublin Core cataloging standards to create standardized Dublin Core records for such purposes as improving the accuracy of search and data retrieval; improving resource discovery; improving quality control of metadata records; facilitating interoperability between organizations; standardizing metadata, ready to share, connect, interconnect, and integrate data for information systems in library activities and digital government.
- Connecting and sharing library resources;
- Solutions for management of digital copyright;
- Some applications of digital technology in processing and standardizing data and building a digital knowledge warehouse system…
The training content is selected and compiled in the most consistent and popular way with not too detailed level of application, and be suitable to the infrastructure, technology, software and digital resources conditions of the libraries and archives centers in our country.
In addition to the lectures and presentations of lecturers and presenters, many in-depth comments and discussions of trainees have created a vibrant and positive learning atmosphere, helping trainees acquire knowledge the best. At the training course, the trainees expressed their sincere thanks to the NLV‘s leaders for the attention and favorable conditions for the course. The NLV not only demonstrates a key role in providing training courses related to digital transformation content, helping libraries nationwide access general knowledge about processing and standardizing metadata for digital resources, but has also carefully prepared and selected a professional team of lecturers and presenters who are working directly on information technology to enhance practical experience sharing, helping the trainees easy to understand and absorbs the knowledge better. The training materials which are meticulously and scientifically prepared by the Organizing Committee are the useful reference sources for the trainees while implementing digital transformation at the libraries.
In the summary and closing remarks, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dung – NLV Director highly appreciated the serious learning process of the trainees which made them though must familiarize themselves with new techniques and technologies can still grasp the training content relatively quick and effective. The training program has supplemented basic knowledge and skills in digital data processing, oriented the application of professional standards in data processing and sharing, contributing to the implementation of the digital transformation program in the library industry. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, the NLV Director congratulated all trainees on successfully completing the training program and expected that with the determination to build data standards, link and share information resources among domestic libraries and exchange with foreign libraries, the digital transformation in Vietnamese libraries will definitely be implemented successfully.
After the training course, with important skills in data processing and standardization equipped, the trainees can grasp and basically implement the process of creating digital content, creating metadata records for digital resources and the resources created in digital form or reformatted from existing physical resources, from linkage or sharing…
