Signing ceremony of cooperation agreement between National Library of Viet Nam and International Organization of La Francophonie

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), in implementation of the direction of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST), on the morning of November 24, 2020, in Ha Noi, the National Library of Viet Nam held signing ceremony of cooperation agreement between the National Library of Viet Nam (NLV) and the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) on the implementation of the Francophone Book Space project in Viet Nam’s libraries.

Attending the ceremony, there were Mr. Ta Quang Dong – Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr. Chékou Oussouman – OIF’s Chief Representative for Asia-Pacific, Ms. Kieu Thuy Nga – Director of the NLV; leaders of departments under the MoCST and the Ministry of Information and Communications; Ambassadors, representatives of embassies of countries of the Francophone community, international organizations in Viet Nam; representatives of the project beneficiary libraries, central and Ha Noi news agencies...

The Francophone Book Space project is a part of the programs to support building and disseminating knowledge in French and under the program to support access to knowledge and cultural content implemented by OIF around the world. With the cooperation of the NLV as an OIF partner to receive and manage the book donation program in Viet Nam, integrated spaces at the national library and 8 public libraries in Viet Nam will be established to strengthen the repositories of foreign language collections in beneficiary libraries, thereby allowing the public to access a large number of French works from many French-speaking countries.

In the three years from 2020-2022, a total number of 10,000 French books worth about EUR 180,000, equivalent to VND 5 billion, of various fields and levels such as economics, engineering, technology, medicine, literature, histoty, culture, French language teaching and learning, books for children... will be donated to the NLV and 8 city/province libraries in Ben Tre, Binh Duong, Can Tho, Hai Phong, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Nghe An and Quang Ninh. Special collections will also be facilitated in phase 2 of the project to meet the specific demands of each beneficiary library. Besides, activities to promote the French collections will also be planned by the two sides at the beneficiary libraries during the project period.

On behalf of the NLV and beneficiary libraries, Ms. Kieu Thuy Nga – NLV Director thanked all guests attending the ceremony and expressed her belief that the project is an effective bridge helping Vietnamese people understand more fully about the culture, economy, scientific, technical and technological achievements of countries in the Francophone Community, and at the same time it also helps strengthen the solidarity and friendship within the OIF.
