Opening the training course on “Enhancement of reader service provision for librarians”

In the morning of 12 March, 2012, the National Library of Vietnam (NLV) in cooperation with The Asia Foundation (U.S.A) launched the two-day training course on “Enhancement of reader service provision for Books for Asia recipient libraries in Vietnam” for over 76 librarians of recipient libraries in the North and North Central provinces of Vietnam under the Books for Asia program (BFA program) funded by The Asia Foundation (TAF). The training course takes place in two days (12-13 March 2012) in the framework of the BFA program for Vietnamese libraries in the period of 2009-2012.

The training course’s aim is to provide librarians with supplementary training on service and communication skills while operating reader services, new requirements for provision of library services, roles and tasks of librarians in the era of information technology, needed resources to create the changes as well as methods to mobilize social resources’ support for library activities. Besides, with the presence of the officers from Asia Foundation office in Vietnam, participants from the recipient libraries will have the opportunity to have deepen understanding of the Books for Asia program as well as method on management and operation it in Vietnam recent years and in the future.

This is the 2nd training course on “Enhancement of reader service provision for Books for Asia recipient libraries in Vietnamco-organized by NLV and the Asia Foundation in Vietnam followed the 1st one was organized in Ho Chi Minh city on May 2011 for BFA recipient libraries in the South and South Central of Vietnam.

Information about Books for Asia program

The Books for Asia program of the Asia foundation provides textbook, software and educational materials in nearly half of the century. Since 1954, the Books for Asia program distributes nearly 40 million of books, soft wares and other educational materials for over 50,000 institutions and organizations of 40 countries included Vietnam. The program aims to access the valuable and updated educational resources in English from Publishing Houses in USA in order to advance their communities and contribute to the developing Asia-Pacific, supporting the region's development goals for peace, prosperity, and openness.

The Asia Foundation began its Books for Asia program in Vietnam in 1993. In the period of 2000 to present, NLV plays a role as the Asia Foundation’s partner in Vietnam, the Asia Foundation donated nearly 400,000 English books for 120 recipient libraries in Vietnam including public, university, libraries and information centre of research institutions in Vietnam. Books content is presented in English books in various educational areas and different levels, including natural sciences  (ex. chemistry, physics, biology), science and technology (such as agricultural , industry, medicine, computer science), mathematics, social sciences (including economics, sociology), humanities (such as history, culture, foreign languages​​) and many professional fields (such as law, business administration). The additional materials included children's books, maps and computer software in the form of educational CD-ROM.
